3.31 – RCL Draft Recap #2

So after the 2 hour slog that was my first RCL, I thought I was mentally stretched out for a good RCL draft the 2nd time around. Turns out this one dragged on for 3 (!!!) hours. Im really starting to question my decision to schedule a RCL draft for 11pm this Sunday…Thankfully I had college basketball to distract me as I waited between picks this time so it wasnt too bad.

Round: 1
(1) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Mike Trout CF
(2) California Kid – Andrew McCutchen CF
** (3) Baby Rage – Giancarlo Stanton RF
(4) Team UpNort – Clayton Kershaw SP
(5) Team SINGMAN – Miguel Cabrera 1B
(6) Team Freitas – Paul Goldschmidt 1B
(7) Purple Mays Haze – Jose Abreu 1B
(8) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Jose Bautista RF
(9) Atlanta Geckos – Carlos Gomez CF
(10) Baseball Team – Anthony Rizzo 1B
(11) Team Baumer – Edwin Encarnacion 1B
(12) Blotto’s Colonels – Troy Tulowitzki SS

No real surprises here. I had the option of Goldy, Abreu, or Miggy, but couldnt resist the allure of HR happy Giancarlo.

Round: 2
(13) Blotto’s Colonels – Jose Altuve 2B
(14) Team Baumer – Felix Hernandez SP
(15) Baseball Team – Bryce Harper LF
(16) Atlanta Geckos – Adam Jones CF
(17) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Max Scherzer SP
(18) Purple Mays Haze – Yasiel Puig RF
(19) Team Freitas – Robinson Cano 2B
(20) Team SINGMAN – Josh Donaldson 3B
(21) Team UpNort – Anthony Rendon 2B
** (22) Baby Rage – Nolan Arenado 3B
(23) California Kid – Michael Brantley LF
(24) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Justin Upton LF

Round: 3
(25) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Ian Desmond SS
(26) California Kid – Aroldis Chapman RP
** (27) Baby Rage – Hanley Ramirez SS
(28) Team UpNort – Jacoby Ellsbury CF
(29) Team SINGMAN – Corey Dickerson LF
(30) Team Freitas – Adrian Beltre 3B
(31) Purple Mays Haze – Ryan Braun RF
(32) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Starling Marte LF
(33) Atlanta Geckos – Chris Sale SP
(34) Baseball Team – Stephen Strasburg SP
(35) Team Baumer – Freddie Freeman 1B
(36) Blotto’s Colonels – Madison Bumgarner SP

Reaching is probably the story of this draft. After seeing Donaldson go and knowing Im with a bunch of Razzballers, I went ahead and took Arenado in the 2nd. Hanley Im not too sure about as his injury-history makes me a little leery, but I think the drop off at SS is large enough to justify the pick. Biggest surprise was seeing Chapman go in rd 3 at #26. No closer is worth the risk in the 3rd round.
Round: 4
(37) Blotto’s Colonels – Corey Kluber SP
(38) Team Baumer – Buster Posey C
(39) Baseball Team – Albert Pujols 1B
(40) Atlanta Geckos – Evan Longoria 3B
(41) FantasyBaseball Team Name – George Springer RF
(42) Purple Mays Haze – David Price SP
(43) Team Freitas – Carlos Gonzalez LF
(44) Team SINGMAN – Billy Hamilton CF
(45) Team UpNort – Craig Kimbrel RP
** (46) Baby Rage – Chris Davis 1B
(47) California Kid – Greg Holland RP
(48) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Todd Frazier 3B

Round: 5
(49) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Carlos Santana 3B
(50) California Kid – Koji Uehara RP
** (51) Baby Rage – Zack Greinke SP
(52) Team UpNort – Victor Martinez DH
(53) Team SINGMAN – Matt Harvey SP
(54) Team Freitas – Nelson Cruz LF
(55) Purple Mays Haze – Jose Reyes SS
(56) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Adrian Gonzalez 1B
(57) Atlanta Geckos – Ian Kinsler 2B
(58) Baseball Team – Yoenis Cespedes LF
(59) Team Baumer – Johnny Cueto SP
(60) Blotto’s Colonels – Jon Lester SP

I doubled-down on the power with Chris Davis, hoping the addy helps rejuvenate his numbers. I also took Greinke who should be reliable as my first SP. California Kid seemed intent on cornering the closer market taking Holland and Uehara. Unfortunately, Uehara is already hurt, demonstrating why such strategy is usually discouraged.

Round: 6
(61) Blotto’s Colonels – Evan Gattis C
(62) Team Baumer – Jordan Zimmermann SP
(63) Baseball Team – Kyle Seager 3B
(64) Atlanta Geckos – Prince Fielder 1B
(65) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Jason Heyward RF
(66) Purple Mays Haze – Cole Hamels SP
(67) Team Freitas – Matt Kemp CF
(68) Team SINGMAN – Mookie Betts CF
(69) Team UpNort – Kolten Wong 2B
** (70) Baby Rage – Jeff Samardzija SP
(71) California Kid – Adam Wainwright SP
(72) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Jake Arrieta SP

Round: 7
(73) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Brian Dozier 2B
(74) California Kid – Matt Holliday LF
** (75) Baby Rage – Jason Kipnis 2B
(76) Team UpNort – Mark Melancon RP
(77) Team SINGMAN – Christian Yelich LF
(78) Team Freitas – David Robertson RP
(79) Purple Mays Haze – Trevor Rosenthal RP
(80) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Kris Bryant 3B
(81) Atlanta Geckos – Gerrit Cole SP
(82) Baseball Team – Dee Gordon 2B
(83) Team Baumer – Hunter Pence RF
(84) Blotto’s Colonels – Kole Calhoun RF

Iirc, I was really pining after Wong here, but got scooped. I ended up going with Samardzija and Kipnis. I wonder if going more power/hitting here would have served me better. It seems like Im not surrounding Giancarlo with enough bats to really run away with the hitting cats.

Round: 8
(85) Blotto’s Colonels – Joey Votto 1B
(86) Team Baumer – Kenley Jansen RP
(87) Baseball Team – Starlin Castro SS
(88) Atlanta Geckos – Marcell Ozuna CF
(89) FantasyBaseball Team Name – James Shields SP
(90) Purple Mays Haze – David Ortiz DH
(91) Team Freitas – Mark Trumbo 1B
(92) Team SINGMAN – Dustin Pedroia 2B
(93) Team UpNort – Masahiro Tanaka SP
** (94) Baby Rage – Carlos Carrasco SP
(95) California Kid – Charlie Blackmon RF
(96) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Cody Allen RP

Round: 9
(97) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Jay Bruce RF
(98) California Kid – Jorge Soler RF
** (99) Baby Rage – Garrett Richards SP
(100) Team UpNort – Pablo Sandoval 3B
(101) Team SINGMAN – Julio Teheran SP
(102) Team Freitas – Manny Machado 3B
(103) Purple Mays Haze – Hisashi Iwakuma SP
(104) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Dellin Betances RP
(105) Atlanta Geckos – Tyson Ross SP
(106) Baseball Team – Sonny Gray SP
(107) Team Baumer – Brandon Moss 1B
(108) Blotto’s Colonels – Chris Carter DH

At this point, the number of hitters I was interested in taking thinned out considerably. Carrasco should be nice for Ks. As someone who didnt play fantasy baseball last year and thus didnt get to experience the hype train that was Garrett Richards pre-injury, Im not sure why I am so invested in him this year, but he has found his way on to a couple of my teams when he has fallen. In the 9th, Im not sure he’s a good value for the risk, but if he can come back healthy and effective I may have a good bargain.

Round: 10

(109) Blotto’s Colonels – Brett Gardner CF
(110) Team Baumer – Matt Carpenter 3B
(111) Baseball Team – Gio Gonzalez SP
(112) Atlanta Geckos – Huston Street RP
(113) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Melky Cabrera LF
(114) Purple Mays Haze – J.D. Martinez LF
(115) Team Freitas – Jacob deGrom SP
(116) Team SINGMAN – Steve Cishek RP
(117) Team UpNort – Ryan Zimmerman 3B
** (118) Baby Rage – Xander Bogaerts 3B
(119) California Kid – Matt Adams 1B
(120) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Alex Wood SP

Round: 11
(121) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Wil Myers RF
(122) California Kid – David Wright 3B
** (123) Baby Rage – Joc Pederson LF
(124) Team UpNort – Jonathan Lucroy C
(125) Team SINGMAN – Devin Mesoraco C
(126) Team Freitas – Doug Fister SP
(127) Purple Mays Haze – Phil Hughes SP
(128) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Eric Hosmer 1B
(129) Atlanta Geckos – Leonys Martin CF
(130) Baseball Team – Glen Perkins RP
(131) Team Baumer – Joaquin Benoit RP
(132) Blotto’s Colonels – Alex Gordon LF

After these picks, I started to get flamed for reaching by the draft room and I dont blame them. Pederson is probably more a 14-16th round pick, but I dont trust these RCL animals so I reached for the skies and took him here. By this point, a lot more closers were taken than I would have expected.

Round: 12
(133) Blotto’s Colonels – Josh Harrison RF
(134) Team Baumer – Rusney Castillo CF
(135) Baseball Team – Zach Britton RP
(136) Atlanta Geckos – Drew Storen RP
(137) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Ian Kennedy SP
(138) Purple Mays Haze – Fernando Rodney RP
(139) Team Freitas – Michael Wacha SP
(140) Team SINGMAN – Justin Morneau 1B
(141) Team UpNort – Jimmy Rollins SS
** (142) Baby Rage – Brandon Belt 1B
(143) California Kid – Elvis Andrus SS
(144) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Lucas Duda 1B

Round: 13
(145) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Hector Rondon RP
(146) California Kid – Mat Latos SP
** (147) Baby Rage – Avisail Garcia RF
(148) Team UpNort – A.J. Pollock CF
(149) Team SINGMAN – Ben Zobrist 2B
(150) Team Freitas – Neftali Feliz RP
(151) Purple Mays Haze – Adam LaRoche 1B
(152) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Alexei Ramirez SS
(153) Atlanta Geckos – Salvador Perez C
(154) Baseball Team – Gregory Polanco RF
(155) Team Baumer – Ben Revere CF
(156) Blotto’s Colonels – Alex Cobb SP

Had I not reached for Pederson, I possibly could have gotten him, Garcia, and Pollack, but that might just be me being optimistic. Belt probably would have lasted a few more rounds as well, but his name was fresh in my mind after shotgunning all these fantasy baseball preview podcasts. Pederson and Garcia were just the beginning of my obsession with youthful bats. You’d think Im the fantasy baseball lich with all the young players I draft.

Round: 14
(157) Blotto’s Colonels – Jonathan Papelbon RP
(158) Team Baumer – Alcides Escobar SS
(159) Baseball Team – Yan Gomes C
(160) Atlanta Geckos – Lance Lynn SP
(161) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Brian McCann C
(162) Purple Mays Haze – Danny Salazar SP
(163) Team Freitas – Pedro Alvarez 3B
(164) Team SINGMAN – Daniel Murphy 2B
(165) Team UpNort – Steve Pearce 1B
** (166) Baby Rage – Collin McHugh SP
(167) California Kid – Hyun-Jin Ryu SP
(168) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Brett Cecil RP

Round: 15
(169) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Lorenzo Cain CF
(170) California Kid – Anibal Sanchez SP
** (171) Baby Rage – Khris Davis LF
(172) Team UpNort – Sean Doolittle RP
(173) Team SINGMAN – Rougned Odor 2B
(174) Team Freitas – Michael Pineda SP
(175) Purple Mays Haze – Mike Fiers SP
(176) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Neil Walker 2B
(177) Atlanta Geckos – Danny Santana SS
(178) Baseball Team – Chris Archer SP
(179) Team Baumer – Howie Kendrick 2B
(180) Blotto’s Colonels – Jayson Werth RF

Typical picks of mine, chasing Ks in McHugh and power in Davis. By this point, I probably should have done a better job of reading the room and made moves for some closers.
Round: 16
(181) Blotto’s Colonels – Jake McGee RP
(182) Team Baumer – Jose Quintana SP
(183) Baseball Team – Oswaldo Arcia RF
(184) Atlanta Geckos – Francisco Rodriguez RP
(185) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Francisco Liriano SP
(186) Purple Mays Haze – Matt Shoemaker SP
(187) Team Freitas – Andrew Cashner SP
(188) Team SINGMAN – Addison Reed RP
(189) Team UpNort – Alex Rios RF
** (190) Baby Rage – Yordano Ventura SP
(191) California Kid – Homer Bailey SP
(192) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Jean Segura SS

Round: 17
(193) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Santiago Casilla RP
(194) California Kid – Chase Utley 2B
** (195) Baby Rage – Tyler Clippard RP
(196) Team UpNort – Michael Cuddyer RF
(197) Team SINGMAN – Steven Souza RF
(198) Team Freitas – Jedd Gyorko 2B
(199) Purple Mays Haze – Andrew Miller RP
(200) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Shin-Soo Choo LF
(201) Atlanta Geckos – Drew Smyly SP
(202) Baseball Team – Jered Weaver SP
(203) Team Baumer – Adam Eaton CF
(204) Blotto’s Colonels – Jose Fernandez SP

Finally got the hint and took a closer in Clippard (who may not even have the job in 2 months), but not after taking a stab at another SP. Perhaps Miller, who went a few picks later, would have been a better pick. I have a feeling he may be the closer over Betances.

Round: 18
(205) Blotto’s Colonels – Javier Baez SS
(206) Team Baumer – Jenrry Mejia RP
(207) Baseball Team – Martin Prado 3B
(208) Atlanta Geckos – Curtis Granderson RF
(209) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Scott Kazmir SP
(210) Purple Mays Haze – Drew Hutchison SP
(211) Team Freitas – Jhonny Peralta SS
(212) Team SINGMAN – Joe Nathan RP
(213) Team UpNort – Ken Giles RP
** (214) Baby Rage – Dalton Pompey CF
(215) California Kid – Yadier Molina C
(216) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Yasmany Tomas RF

Round: 19
(217) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Jake Odorizzi SP
(218) California Kid – Wade Davis RP
** (219) Baby Rage – Nick Castellanos 3B
(220) Team UpNort – Brad Boxberger RP
(221) Team SINGMAN – Taijuan Walker SP
(222) Team Freitas – Luke Gregerson RP
(223) Purple Mays Haze – Chase Headley 3B
(224) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Brandon McCarthy SP
(225) Atlanta Geckos – LaTroy Hawkins RP
(226) Baseball Team – Aaron Sanchez SP
(227) Team Baumer – Marlon Byrd RF
(228) Blotto’s Colonels – Dallas Keuchel SP

Pompey should be a solid source of AVG and STL to fill out the back end of the roster. Castellanos was another product of my podcast binge and another example of my hypothesis that players with unique names get drafted higher…
Round: 20
(229) Blotto’s Colonels – Torii Hunter RF
(230) Team Baumer – Kevin Gausman SP
(231) Baseball Team – Nathan Eovaldi SP
(232) Atlanta Geckos – Shelby Miller SP
(233) FantasyBaseball Team Name – John Lackey SP
(234) Purple Mays Haze – Scooter Gennett 2B
(235) Team Freitas – Rajai Davis LF
(236) Team SINGMAN – Carlos Martinez SP
(237) Team UpNort – Adam Lind 1B
** (238) Baby Rage – Yasmani Grandal C
(239) California Kid – Aramis Ramirez 3B
(240) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Chris Tillman SP

Round: 21
(241) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Jesse Hahn SP
(242) California Kid – Carlos Beltran RF
** (243) Baby Rage – Michael Saunders RF
(244) Team UpNort – Rick Porcello SP
(245) Team SINGMAN – T.J. House SP
(246) Team Freitas – Russell Martin C
(247) Purple Mays Haze – Mike Napoli 1B
(248) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Brett Lawrie 3B
(249) Atlanta Geckos – Jose Ramirez SS
(250) Baseball Team – Kennys Vargas DH
(251) Team Baumer – Marcus Semien 3B
(252) Blotto’s Colonels – Joe Mauer 1B

Grandal is a C Im finding ending up a lot of my teams. If I cant get a good price on Gattis, I just wait on C and often times I find Grandal just sitting there near the ends of drafts. The move from Petco and distance from ACL surgery give me hope for a nice return this late in the draft.

Round: 22
(253) Blotto’s Colonels – Matt Cain SP
(254) Team Baumer – Wilin Rosario C
(255) Baseball Team – Nick Markakis RF
(256) Atlanta Geckos – Austin Jackson CF
(257) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Justin Verlander SP
(258) Purple Mays Haze – Erick Aybar SS
(259) Team Freitas – James Paxton SP
(260) Team SINGMAN – Shane Greene SP
(261) Team UpNort – R.A. Dickey SP
** (262) Baby Rage – Trevor Plouffe 3B
(263) California Kid – Chris Owings SS
(264) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Wilson Ramos C

Round: 23
(265) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Dexter Fowler CF
(266) California Kid – Tony Watson RP
** (267) Baby Rage – Edward Mujica RP
(268) Team UpNort – Aaron Hill 2B
(269) Team SINGMAN – Matt Wieters C
(270) Team Freitas – J.J. Hardy SS
(271) Purple Mays Haze – Josh Reddick RF
(272) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Lonnie Chisenhall 3B
(273) Atlanta Geckos – Alex Rodriguez 3B
(274) Baseball Team – C.J. Cron 1B
(275) Team Baumer – Derek Holland SP
(276) Blotto’s Colonels – Jeurys Familia RP

When I drafted Mujica, Uehara’s injury hadnt been announced. Who would have thought that a 40-yearold was susceptible to injury…

Round: 24
(277) Blotto’s Colonels – Matt Garza SP
(278) Team Baumer – Billy Butler DH
(279) Baseball Team – Pat Neshek RP
(280) Atlanta Geckos – Jonathon Niese SP
(281) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Coco Crisp CF
(282) Purple Mays Haze – Travis d’Arnaud C
(283) Team Freitas – Travis Snider RF
(284) Team SINGMAN – Arismendy Alcantara 2B
(285) Team UpNort – Bobby Parnell RP
** (286) Baby Rage – Sergio Romo RP
(287) California Kid – Desmond Jennings CF
(288) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Joakim Soria RP

Round: 25
(289) 2 Wongs are always Wright – Ervin Santana SP
(290) California Kid – Kyle Hendricks SP
** (291) Baby Rage – Trevor Bauer SP
(292) Team UpNort – Kendrys Morales 1B
(293) Team SINGMAN – Andrelton Simmons SS
(294) Team Freitas – Chad Qualls RP
(295) Purple Mays Haze – Denard Span CF
(296) FantasyBaseball Team Name – Jake Diekman RP
(297) Atlanta Geckos – Jason Hammel SP
(298) Baseball Team – Norichika Aoki RF
(299) Team Baumer – Adam Ottavino RP
(300) Blotto’s Colonels – Carl Crawford LF

Romo another RP that could find himself in the closer role if the guy in front of him slips up. If Im going to be spending a roster spot on a set-up guy, I try to look for ones that can at least get Ks (hopefully with good ratios) if they arent getting me SVs. If the incumbent they’re setting up is old/injury-prone/wild, even better. Bauer has always intrigued me with his unorthodox approach to pitching. It doesnt seem to have worked well so far, but in round 25, why not?

Looking back, the reach was real. Im going to need most of my players to play to their potential if I want to compete. Im still taking a bit too much pitching early in the draft, even with Giancarlo and Davis, I may be lacking in the hitting department. Hanley and Xander should provide above-average production from the middle-infield, but Im wondering if the power will be there from the corner-infielders and OF. Again, I better be extra-vigilant for closers, because I totally missed the boat on them this draft. It doesnt help that I dropped Mujica already before it was announced that he would be closing while Uehara is out….oops >_>
